Simple List of Morgan Family Members Across the Generations

Morgan HeadstoneIt isn’t clear whether anyone descending from the Morgan family that settled present day Morgan, NJ still has the last name of “Morgan”.  As far as I know, no family members still live in Morgan and none of those who live near Morgan, NJ appear to have that surname anymore.  I find that to be both ironic and kind of sad.

The purpose of this write-up is to give an initial list of one son from each generation who had the last name of “Morgan”.  It starts with the first Morgan who came, reportedly in 1641, from Wales to Gravesend, New Amsterdam in “The New World” (present day Brooklyn, NY) and concludes with the last person named “Morgan” who was in the Morgan, NJ area that I am thus far aware of.

This list, which by no means the full Morgan family tree, will help when reading other pages or postings on this Morgan-NJ.org web site.  Discussions can get a little confusing because in the nine generations presented in this posting, there are four people named “Charles”, three named “James” and two named “Robert”. This list was chosen since most of what I know so far involves the individuals shown in the list. Please note that the son listed won’t always be the first born son and it doesn’t show wives or all children.  This list is the best attempt given what we thus far have discovered and has been compiled from a variety of sources.  In other words there are undoubtedly some inaccuracies.  Fortunately because this is the internet, if/when I come across more accurate information, I will come back to this posting and make the correction(s).

Here we go!

  • Carel “Charles”.  Born: After 1620 in Newport, Wales. Died: 1668 in Gravesend, New Amsterdam (present day Brooklyn, NY).
  • Charles, Jr. Born: Circa 1648 in Gravesend, New Amsterdam. Died: 1720 in Perth Amboy or Middletown, New Jersey.
  • Charles III.  Born: After 1683 in Flushing, NY. Died: 1749.
  • James, Sr. (Captain).  Born: 1734. Died: 1784. Buried in Morgan Family Cemetery.
  • James, Jr. (Major General).  Born: 4 January 1757. Died: 14 November 1822. Buried in Morgan Family Cemetery.
  • Charles.  Born: 13 January 1808 in South Amboy.  Died: 1 September 1852. Buried in Morgan Family Cemetery.
  • James Rutus. Born: 12 November 1833.  Died: 26 August 1898. Buried in Morgan Family Cemetery.
  • Robert E. Lee.  Born: 1878.  Died: ?
  • Robert D.  Born:  1911.  Died: 27 February 1942 on the Marlboro-Matawan Road (No children)

I intend on providing the wider family tree over time as well as a bio write-up for each person as information becomes available.  In the mean time I would like to thank Ed Campbell, Sue Meyer, and Blair Case for their help with the generation of this initial generation list.

Is that part about Robert E Lee something that has been verified by anyone? That’s intensely interesting.

Do you know where the Marlboro-Matawan Road would have been and/or is today? Thank you for any info you may have.

My name is Raymond Morgan, I don’t live in Morgan but live nearby. My dad, (Morgan side of the family) always tells me how we have a rich family history in Central NJ, and I’m fairly certain when I read your website I’m reading at least some of my family history. Thanks for compiling it!

Any idea if any of the above is the same Charles Morgan who owned land in Throgs Neck (then part of Westchester, NY)?

From the book Thomas Stevenson of London, England and His Descendants: “John Stevenson removed from Newtown to Westchester County, New York, in 1710, in which year he bought 311 acres of Charles Morgan at Throg’s Neck.”

In a 1711 deed, John Baxter sold land in Throgs Neck to his father Thomas Baxter which was bounded “e’terly. by ye land formerly in ye tennor of Charls. Morgan, now ye land of John Stephens.”

There is no Charles Morgan present in the 1698 census of Westchester, so probably he got there sometime between 1698 and 1710 and/or he was an absentee landowner.

Like at least one Charles Morgan, John Stevenson also lived in Long Island and New Jersey at various points. Perhaps they knew each other? Anyway, I’m looking for information on how Charles Morgan ended up with the land in Westchester.

Sorry, I don’t recall running into anything indicating the Charles Morgan I wrote about was the same Charles Morgan who owned land in Throgs Neck.

Do you by chance know of any information on Thomas Morgan born 1718? I am stuck on information regarding him, his wife Martha and their daughter Nancy. Thomas was the son of Charles III (Charles Stephen Morgan) I am a direct descendant of this lineage. Thank you!

Hi Amanda, I have nearly no information on Thomas other than that he was one of 5 boys and 3 girls (In this order: James, Sr., Abigail (or Abigal), William, Charles, Mary, Thomas, Daniel, Sarah). I don’t see that I have the first name of his mother but do show her last name as “Ellison”. Please contact me at MorganNewJersey@gmail.com! Thanks! Verne

    I’m related to Charles Morgan:
His parents were Rachel Hopton and Thomas Morgan
    Thomas ancestors were:
Sir William Morgan and Elizabeth Winters
    Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Bodenham
    Henry Morgan and Catherine Kemeys
    Rowland Morgan and Blanche Thomas
    Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Vaughn
I descend from Rachel (Hopton) Morgan’s sister Abigail Hopton. Abigail married Nicholas Stillwell. Rachel (Hopton) Morgan’s son Charles Morgan the subject of your story was the first husband of Catherine or Katherine and after he died Katherine married Nicholas Stillwell Jr. the son of Nicholas and Abigail. Katherine and Nicholas Stillwell are my ancestors. Charles Morgan and Nicholas Stillwell were cousins.
The Hopton sisters also descend from the Morgan’s too:
    Robert Hopton and Jane Kemeys
    Rowland Hopton and Mary Lewis
John Jenkin Kemeys and Margaret Morgan
    Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Vaughn
Nicholas Stillwell came here along with two brothers Jasper and John Stillwell, and their nephew John Cooke and Nicholas two young sons Richard and Nicholas Stillwell Jr. They came after Abigail (Hopton) Stillwell died. John Cooke was the son of Nicholas Stillwell’s sister Mabel (Stillwell) Cooke. In some old books it was written John Cooke of this family was “The Regicide” and I thought so too, but this is not true. They got the two Cookes confused.
Also some say Nicholas, Jasper and John were Cookes but this is not true. There was much literary fraud during the 1800 to early 1900’s as some families hired authors to puff up their image to famous ancestors, nobility and wealth to be able to attend prestigious universities. My sources are my ancestors, not always the old books. Here we see the though connection to Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Vaughn. Also Nicholas and Abigail were Anabaptists and that’s why they came here. These are my maternal ancestors.

Just went to Mystic, CT and checked out the whaling ship, Charles Morgan. I know the person it’s named for is not the same one from here, but I’m just curious to know if they are related.

Don’t think there is any relation unless perhaps one traces it back to Wales from many hundreds of years ago.
