Morgan Memories – Robert E Lee Inn Menu

Based on reader feedback, the Robert E Lee Inn, originally built as Cady’s House of Sea Food in the 1920’s and which sadly burned down in 1986, was a very much loved part of Morgan history.

Here is a scan of an original Robert E Lee Inn menu! A huge thank you goes to long time Morgan resident Debbie Kath Jackson who indicated, “This menu is from the early 1970’s, I would say probably 1972. The original was hand written by the bookkeeper Joyce Baily-Stratton, who also lived next to the R.E.Lee. I also lived and worked there at that time. A lot of fun memories, great food, and great co-workers.

Notice that you can get a T-Bone steak dinner for $8.75. That certainly was quite a while ago!

Wow, Debbie. I never knew you still had one of these. I recognized my mother’s handwriting immediately. And yes we did have a lot of fun. Remember the baby whale? Remember docking boats. Remember Christmas in July dumping Ivory Snow on the bridge to the boats below? I visit this site when I need childhood memory fix.

I worked there in 1977-78. I recall the menu cover but the prices seem a bit older than that. Also the menu we used was somewhat abbreviated from this one.
Brings back great memories; met my wife of 36 years there. She was the cute salad girl and I was the sous chef!

We used to go to Robert E. Lee restaurant for the $1.50 specials! Stuffed cabbages and
    pork chops were delicious!

I played music there with a trio called The Ambassadors way back in the late 60’s. Lots of good memories of the OLD DAYS when I was young and stupid.

Miss those old stupid days a whole bunch !!! Thanks for the memories.

I remember a band at the Robert E. Lee. I lived upstairs (daughter of Joyce Bailey-Stratton). The bandstand was directly beneath by bedroom. I mostly remember the band’s member with the last name Falanga. They played “Kansas City” all the time.

My grandparents owned the restaurant during its last years, and its also where my parents met. I was born more than a decade after it burned down, & they don’t have much left over from the place, so its pretty cool to see this. Thanks for posting 🙂

    Sherry,
I grew up in Morgan, My parents owned Marathon Bus company. I remember a boy (was a few years older than me) his last name was Bailey, we used to call him Beetle, like the cartoon character. For some reason I believed that he lived in one of the small houses there.

My first job was a dishwasher at the robert e Lee still living in Morgan and loving it I dislike the Sayreville politicians. And the way they decide what they think is best. Two massage parlors and an adult bookstore
Now new apartment buildings to boot. There goes the hood and today they tore up the brick road in front the firehouse
    Not the same place
North Carolina is looking good right about now

I used to go there with my parents. Veal Parm subs that I will remember forever. I also remember kids jumping off the bridge. We moved to Florida in 1983 and I remember reading that it burned down, my father had a subscription to the Home News. Such fond memories.

I used to repair the bar TV set and maintain the PA system from the early 70’s up to the 80’s. My wife and I ate at the Lee often, many times on a Friday night with friends and returning again on Sundays for the specials. My favorite dish was the veal parm! My wife and I were devastated when it was destroyed by fire. Charlie was always a great guy to deal with and I considered him a friend as well as a customer. Some of the best times were spent at the Robert E. Lee. It, and Charlie, are sorely missed.

My father Walter was the head chef there from about 1968 until he passed away in 1975. My mom, aunt, and our next-door neighbor (we lived in Fords) were all waitresses there, and at least one of my brothers and I think some cousins had summer jobs there. I remember Charlie, and I think a waitress named Maureen was his girlfriend. My Dad put potato pancakes on the menu, and I think he started their Tuesday night steak dinner specials. I remember being there a lot from when I was about five until my dad passed when I was eleven. So many memories from that place! I even remember one of the dishwashers, a Bulgarian guy named Krum.

Wow, I am so happy I found this website after 55 years. Finally revisited fond memories going to The Robert E Lee Inn. A fun time during my teen age years, going there with my friends from Colonia. Sorry to hear it burnt down in 1986. Next, I will visit the site.

ONE OF THE COOLEST ARTICLES I’VE SEEN ON THE LEE. PICS ARE BETTER THAN MOST I’VE EVER SEEN. I WAS BORN IN 1954 AND AND FIRST STARTED RIDING MY BIKE TO THE LEE IN CIRCA 1966 OR SO. MY LOVE OF BOATS AND THE SHORE MADE THIS MY PLACE TO GO TO CHECK OUT THE BOATS AND TO TIE THEM UP FOR A QUARTER OR NOTHING SOMETIMES. I STILL AM A HOMING PIGEON AND ALWAYS CHECK OUT ALL AROUND THE AREA IN MY BOAT OR CAR. WHEN I TURNED DRINKING AGE THAT WAS THE PLACE TO GO TO DRINK AND EAT. IT WAS THE MORGAN BOYS CLUBHOUSE TO PARTY AND BRING OR LOOK FOR THE GIRLS. LASTLY THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FREINDS AND WISHED THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO END. YOU KNOW HOW THE STORY GOES RIGHT. IF THOSE WALLS AND CAMERAS COULD ONLY TALK. (HA) GLAD THEY CAN’T AND DIDN’T. BUT WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING, AND DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THOSE WERE THE TRULY SOME OF IF NOT THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE. THE LEE AND ALL OF IT’S SURROUNDINGS WERE THE COOLEST AND THE PLACE TO BE AND GO TO. MISS IT ALOT.
