{"id":1029,"date":"2013-11-04T07:06:25","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T07:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/?page_id=1029"},"modified":"2013-11-04T07:10:39","modified_gmt":"2013-11-04T07:10:39","slug":"a-small-world-mystery-stamps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/sample-page\/morgans-people-places\/things\/a-small-world-mystery-stamps\/","title":{"rendered":"A Small World &#038; Mystery Stamps"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Morgan Minutemen \u2013 A Small World &amp; Mystery Stamps<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DLand-Dinos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1025 alignright\" alt=\"DLand Dinos\" src=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DLand-Dinos.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DLand-Dinos.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DLand-Dinos-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DLand-Dinos-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>There were two things I had long been looking for every time I would go home and visit my Mom when she still lived in Morgan.\u00a0 The first was the 45 RPM record of \u201cIt\u2019s a Small World\u201d my parents bought for me at the 1965 New York World\u2019s Fair from the Pepsi-Cola Pavilion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This exhibit, which was fronted by a 120 foot tall mobile entitled \u201cTower of the Four Winds\u201d, contained a 12-minute \u201cSalute to UNICEF\u201d boat ride where \u201cAnimated figures of children dance, play with droll animals, and sing \u2018It\u2019s a Small World.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 The exhibit and doll\u2019s designer was the legendary Mary Blair and the song writers were two of Walt Disney\u2019s favorites, The Sherman Brothers.<\/p>\n<p>This was just one of four exhibits designed and built by Walt Disney.\u00a0 The others were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Carousel Theater contained within General Electric Progressland.<\/li>\n<li>The Mr. Lincoln audio animatronic exhibit for the State of Illinois Pavilion.<\/li>\n<li>The animated dinosaurs on the \u201cMagic Skyway\u201d at the Ford Motor Pavilion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Going to the New York World\u2019s Fair with my family and our neighbors Andy and Al left quite an impression on me as a very young pup which I obviously carry to this day (hence this posting).\u00a0 By 1965, Disneyland was 10 years old (opened July 17, 1955).\u00a0 Expanding the Disneyland concept to somewhere on the east coast of the United States was in the back of Walt Disney\u2019s mind but for some reason he wasn\u2019t sure whether people \u201cback east\u201d, as they say here in California, would take to it.\u00a0 He looked for some way to experiment when the NY World\u2019s Fair fell into his lap.<\/p>\n<p>Walt\u2019s four experiments were a great success.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamp.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1027\" alt=\"Savings Bond Stamp\" src=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamp.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a>After the fair closed, Walt trucked all of the exhibits back to Anaheim, California for incorporation into Disneyland.\u00a0 Walt was able to expand his theme park and have someone else pay for it!\u00a0 Today, the Carousel of Progress is located in the \u201cMagicKingdom\u201d at Walt Disney World where it was moved to in 1974.\u00a0 Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln has been reopened in the Opera House on Main Street in Disneyland in Anaheim after a few year hiatus.\u00a0 The dinosaurs are still in Disneyland (Anaheim) and can be seen while on the Disneyland Railroad when traveling from Tomorrowland to the Main Street Station.\u00a0 It took me a few years to piece this one together.\u00a0 I had always thought the dinosaurs on the train ride looked familiar when one night I realized they were from the Ford Pavilion!\u00a0 It only took something like 40 years to figure that out!\u00a0 This was later confirmed in a Disney book I read. At the time of the fair, my Dad worked for Ford Motor Company and used to supply parts for this exhibit.\u00a0 We were able to move to the front of the line when we went!<\/p>\n<p>Of course the \u201cIt\u2019s a Small World\u201d ride went on to be one of the biggest successes in Disney history.\u00a0 It is still in Anaheim (having been renovated in 2009) and still has long lines of children dragging their parents onto it.\u00a0 Every Christmas season, Disneyland puts thousands of lights on the building\u2019s exterior and it is just beautiful to look at.\u00a0 This ride has also been incorporated into all of the Disney park locations around the world: Anaheim, CA; Orlando, Florida: Tokyo, Japan; Paris, France; Hong Kong, China.\u00a0 Interestingly, according to info on various web sites, there is presently no plan to have this ride in the Shanghai Disneyland set to open in 2015.\u00a0 They wish to keep it exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Stamp-Book-Cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1024\" alt=\"Stamp Book Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Stamp-Book-Cover.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"634\" \/><\/a>The second thing I would look for at Mom\u2019s was a book of stamps.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about S&amp;H Green Stamps, which I did find, or postage stamps.\u00a0 Actually I couldn\u2019t remember exactly what the stamps were for.\u00a0 All I remembered was that we would buy them, weekly I think, in class at Jesse Selover Elementary School; that they were images of Minute Men; and that we would need to lick them and stick them in some kind of booklet.\u00a0 The goal was to fill the booklet but I couldn\u2019t remember what the reward was for filling it up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamps.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1028\" alt=\"Savings Bond Stamps\" src=\"http:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamps.jpg\" width=\"293\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamps.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.morgan-nj.org\/blog\/contentdir\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Savings-Bond-Stamps-138x300.jpg 138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a>The final result, while moving Mom out of Morgan in the summer of 2009, was 50\/50, or really 25\/25\/50.\u00a0 While I found the Small World album cover, unfortunately I never did locate the record itself.\u00a0 This is probably very explainable as like every other kid then \u2013 AND NOW \u2013 I would repeatedly play this record over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over\u2026\u00a0 No wonder it was never able to be found!\u00a0 Parents will understand what I\u2019m [not] saying here.<\/p>\n<p>Happily, I did find the book of stamps and can now tell you what the stamps were for \u2013 US Savings Bonds!\u00a0 This was an incremental approach which allowed for little kids to eventually be able to buy bonds,\u00a0 25\u00a2 at a time.\u00a0 $18.75 would get you a $20.00 savings bond.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll note that the image on the Savings Bond stamps are of a statue entitled <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Minute_Man.JPG\" target=\"_blank\">The Minute Man<\/a>.\u00a0 This statue was created by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Chester_French\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Chester French<\/a> and unveiled on April 19, 1875 at the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Lexington_and_Concord\" target=\"_blank\">battles at Lexington and Concord<\/a>.\u00a0 Another interesting note is that President Ulysses S.
