A number of people have asked what \u201c40 Horses\u201d was.\u00a0 I have no idea.\u00a0 Does anyone know?<\/i><\/p>\n

This was one of the early topics on this Morgan-NJ.org web site and related to the name of something I don\u2019t recall ever having heard in my few decades in Morgan.\u00a0 Readers very quickly responded to my question.\u00a0 Unfortunately all of that banter was lost when this web site was destroyed.\u00a0 Fortunately, I do still remember what the answer was though no one knew for certain precisely why it was named as such.<\/p>\n

According to the readers of this web site, present or previous Morgan residents, \u201cBig Suey\u201d was another name for \u201c40 Horses\u201d.\u00a0 Great, so what was \u201cBig Suey?\u201d\u00a0 Big Suey was one of the hills \u2013 more like a small peninsula \u2013 which went from the top of the bluff, through the red\/orange walled soil, down to the railroad tracks.\u00a0 You were able to access Big Suey via a number of ways: pathways from Midland Avenue (next to my aunt & uncle\u2019s house) or Dodd Place, climbing up Big Suey from the railroad tracks, or a narrow foot path etched in the side of the hill from \u201cLittle Suey\u201d the top of which was located at the cemetery.<\/p>\n

Some thought the name \u201c40 Horses\u201d represented the number of horses which would have fit side by side on the hill.\u00a0 At this time, I really don\u2019t know for certain but remain hopeful that someone will turn up something definitive sometime on this (as well as a picture).\u00a0 Thirty years ago, Big Suey was away from the houses and streets and provided an unobstructed view of the bay all the way from South Amboy to Sandy Hook. At the base, I believe, was an area which was called something like \u201cThe Moon\u201d due to the mounds of dirt.\u00a0 Today, according to HistoricalAerials.com, what was once known as \u201cBig Suey\u201d or \u201c40 Horses\u201d is now a yard with a built-in pool which overlooks the circle at the north end of the Cliff Avenue extension.\u00a0 That\u2019s progress, baby. I guess.<\/p>\n
